Day 3

In the words of Thomas Jefferson, "Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude."

This quote is only fitting as our main event of the day was found in the previous home of our beloved third president of the United States. Starting off the day bright and early at 8:00, we departed from Charleston, West Virgina with a final destination of Charlottesville, Virginia for the night. Before we left Charleston, our Coach Host for the day, KelsiJo Crouch gave us an inspiring quote by Dr. Suess, "Sometimes you never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory," encouraging us to take in every moment of this incredible trip and realize how lucky we are to experience and see all that this trip entails. Around 10:00, we stopped in Lewisburg, West Virginia at a Walmart, where kids bought a wide range of items from donuts to Hawaiian shirts. On the way, we watched the Classic Disney Princess movie, "Beauty and the Beast," followed by listening to some of our favorite music provided by Brody. Once we arrived in Charlottesville, around 12:30, we ate lunch before going to Monticello.
After Driving along a beautiful green scenery on the road into Monticello, we stopped for a short film about Jefferson's life, followed by a visit to either the Museum or the Discovery Room, before going to the house our former president resided in. We took a tour learning and seeing about his great interest and time dedicated to trades such as architecture, literacy, music, and much more, which was all evident from the artifacts within his home. Some major information we took away from Monticello was his ironic need to persuade the nation to rid of slavery, yet not enough to free his personal slaves, he believed that educated people could govern themselves, which initially is the basis of our American government today, and the fact that President Jefferson was extremely innovative and ahead of his time in terms of architecture, which he learned on his own, shown evidently throughout his home and property. The grounds included the house, only built twice, his cemetery including his personal tomb stone and his close family, along with slaves' rooms, gardens, and tremendous views.
After Monticello, we ate supper near the hotel. Many tried new things, including Mediterranean food in which kids found they really enjoyed. Evening activities including some shopping, card games, and swimming. We wrapped up our group activities for the night with reflections over the day in the hotel lobby. As for tomorrow, Montpelier and our first night in DC!

  1. Say hello to the Iowa delegation and chaperones for me. They are good people! I do hope you all ask great questions and challenge each other to think deeply about what we all have been given by those who have passed on before us. May it inspire and encourage you in your personal, community and Kansas 4-H efforts. We need your best! Learn lots to encourage and challenge us all in order to be the leaders our tomorrow needs! Have fun while doing all that too! 😎
